Anandi Gopal

Set in 19th-century colonial India, Anandi Gopal chronicles the biographical journey of Yamuna, who is renamed Anandi after marrying an eccentric, progressive post-office clerk named Gopalrao Joshi. When their newborn infant dies due to the acute lack of medical infrastructure, Anandi channels grief into resolve, deciding with Gopalrao's fierce backing to pursue medical education. Defying deep-seated social orthodoxies, ostracization, and frail physical health, she sails to the United States and graduates from the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania to become one of India's earliest female doctors.
