Based on the true story of Gilbert Galvan Jr., a charming career criminal known as "The Flying Bandit," the film follows his audacious escape from a Michigan prison and his flight to Canada. Adopting the alias Robert Whiteman, he falls in love and starts a family, but soon realizes he cannot support them through legal means. Utilizing his natural gift for disguises and non-violent bank robberies, he hits a record 59 institutions across the country, often flying to multiple cities in a single day. As he scales his operations with the help of a local gangster, he finds himself in the crosshairs of a relentless police task force determined to end his historic crime spree.
