Set in a tranquil French seaside resort during the 1970s, By the Sea follows the crumbling marriage of Vanessa, a former dancer, and Roland, an American writer struggling with a severe creative block. As they drift apart in silence and grief, their isolation is interrupted by the arrival of a vibrant young couple in the neighboring suite. Observation of the newlyweds’ intimacy sparks a complicated voyeuristic obsession that forces Vanessa and Roland to confront their own long-buried traumas and the deep-seated resentment threatening to dissolve their bond forever.
