Based on a true story, Freedom Writers follows Erin Gruwell, an idealistic first-time teacher assigned to a racially divided high school in Long Beach, California, shortly after the 1992 L.A. riots. Faced with students who are hardened by gang violence and systemic poverty, Erin struggles to gain their respect until she introduces journals for them to document their daily lives. By encouraging her students to share their personal struggles through writing and educating them on the history of the Holocaust, she helps them break cycles of resentment and find common ground. This powerful drama highlights the transformative power of empathy and education as a marginalized group of teenagers finds their voice and hope for a better future.
