Higher Ground

Inspired by Carolyn S. Briggs' memoir This Dark World, "Higher Ground" marks the directorial debut of Vera Farmiga, who also stars as Corinne, a woman navigating a twenty-year spiritual odyssey within a tight-knit evangelical community. After a near-tragedy leads her to find solace in a fundamentalist sect, Corinne eventually begins to feel the constraints of the group’s rigid dogma and gender roles. As her personal doubts grow and her marriage undergoes strain, the film provides a sensitive, non-judgmental exploration of the tension between organized religion and the individual’s search for an authentic, internal connection with faith.
