In the year 2054, Mickey Barnes finds himself in a desperate financial situation, leading him to sign up for a dangerous colonization mission to the ice planet Niflheim. He takes on the role of an "Expendable"—a disposable worker whose body is regenerated through cloning whenever he dies, with his memories intact. The system works efficiently until a major glitch occurs: Mickey 17 survives a lethal mission only to return to the base and discover that his successor, Mickey 18, has already been printed. In a colony led by the fascist-leaning Kenneth Marshall, who strictly forbids "multiples," the two clones must navigate a fragile coexistence while dealing with the planet's native, sentient "Creepers" and a blossoming romance with security agent Nasha.
