Set in 19th-century England, the story follows Julia Thistlewaite, a high-society lady who is publicly humiliated after failing to meet the strict requirements of a secret list held by London's most eligible bachelor, Jeremy Malcolm. Seeking revenge, Julia enlists her childhood friend Selina Dalton to play the role of Malcolm's ideal match, only to find the plan complicated when genuine feelings begin to develop.
