Charlie Babbitt is a self‑centred Los Angeles car dealer whose father dies and leaves the bulk of his estate not to Charlie but to Raymond, an older brother he never knew existed who has been institutionalised and is an autistic savant. Charlie, motivated by money, takes Raymond on a cross‑country trip from Cincinnati to Los Angeles, intending to use him to gain access to the inheritance — but along the way their journey becomes one of discovery, brotherhood and change as Charlie learns to care for Raymond and re‑thinks what truly matters.
