Based on one of the most thoroughly documented cases of exorcism in American history, the film follows the harrowing experience of Emma Schmidt in 1928 Iowa. Two priests from vastly different backgrounds—Father Theophilus Riesinger, a seasoned exorcist grappling with a troubled past, and Father Joseph Steiger, a younger, skeptical priest questioning his own faith—must bridge their ideological divide to confront a malevolent demonic presence. As the ritual intensifies over several weeks, the priests face a series of terrifying supernatural phenomena that push their spiritual and physical endurance to the absolute limit.
