In the 1970s, young J.R. Maguire moves into his grandfather's dilapidated Long Island home after being abandoned by his father, a New York City disc jockey known only as "The Voice." Under the guidance of his charismatic and well-read Uncle Charlie, the local bartender at a pub called The Dickens, J.R. finds a surrogate father figure and a sanctuary of stories. Encouraged to pursue his passion for literature, J.R. navigates the complexities of his working-class upbringing and his mother's fierce ambitions for his education. As he grows into adulthood and attends Yale, the film captures his persistent quest to find his own voice as a writer while balancing the bittersweet realities of family, heartbreak, and the search for identity.
