About The Woman King
Set in the 1820s, The Woman King follows General Nanisca, the battle-tested leader of the Agojie—an all-female regiment of fierce warriors dedicated to defending the West African Kingdom of Dahomey. As the encroaching Oyo Empire and European slave traders threaten Dahomey's sovereignty and people, Nanisca trains a resilient new crop of recruits, including the spirited young orphan Nawi. Balancing intense physical combat, personal sacrifice, and historical trauma, the Agojie unite to protect their kingdom, safeguard their freedom, and challenge the oppressive forces threatening their existence.
