In the late 1980s, Saúl Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso, Texas, travels regularly to Ciudad Juárez to compete in the macho world of Lucha Libre. Tired of playing the masked underdog "El Topo" who is destined to lose, Saúl collaborates with his new trainer, Sabrina, to create a flamboyant "exótico" persona named Cassandro. Drawing inspiration from a favorite telenovela, Saúl ditches the mask and embraces a campy, unmasked identity that challenges the deep-seated homophobia of the wrestling circuit.
