Set amidst the turbulent backdrop of the 1947 Partition of India, Manto follows the life of the fearless, iconoclastic Urdu author and playwright Saadat Hasan Manto as he leaves behind his beloved Bombay film circle for an uncertain future in Lahore, Pakistan. Unwilling to sanitise the brutal, complex realities of communal violence and marginalized human existence, Manto faces staunch obscenity charges, censorship, and institutional persecution while steadfastly defending free expression, even as the emotional cost and mounting isolation take a severe toll on his family life and psychological well-being.
