Scarface (1983) is a gritty crime drama following Tony Montana, a Cuban refugee who arrives in Miami during the Mariel boatlift seeking the American dream. He starts working under a local drug lord, demonstrates ruthless ambition and violent resolve, and gradually rises to become one of the most powerful and feared drug kingpins in the cocaine trade. However, as his wealth and power increase, so do his enemies, paranoia, and personal demons, leading him into a brutal downfall. Along the way, themes of excess, loyalty, betrayal, and the corruption inherent in power are laid bare under director Brian De Palma’s stylistic lens.
