Following the selfless sacrifice of Spock and the defeat of Khan, Admiral James T. Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise return to Earth, only to find their victory overshadowed by personal tragedy. Dr. McCoy begins exhibiting erratic behavior, eventually revealed to be caused by Spock’s "katra"—his living spirit—which Spock transferred to McCoy just before his death. Discovering that Spock’s body may have been regenerated by the Genesis Effect on the newly formed Genesis Planet, Kirk and his loyal officers defy Starfleet orders and steal the decommissioned Enterprise to retrieve their friend. Their mission turns into a deadly confrontation when a ruthless Klingon commander, Kruge, arrives at the planet seeking to weaponize the Genesis technology, forcing Kirk to make the ultimate sacrifice to save his crew and bring Spock home.
