The Vigil

Steeped in ancient Jewish lore and demonology, The Vigil is a supernatural horror film set over the course of a single evening in Brooklyn's Hasidic Borough Park neighborhood. Yakov, a young man who has recently left his insular religious community and is struggling with financial woes and past trauma, reluctantly accepts an offer to act as a "shomer"—a person who watches over the body of a deceased community member overnight. Shortly after arriving at the dilapidated house of the recently departed, Yakov realizes that he is not alone and must face a malevolent, ancient spirit known as a Mazzik that feeds on human pain and trauma.
