Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a successful investment banker whose life collapses when his wife dies in a car crash. Struggling with numbness and grief, he begins writing an unusually candid complaint letter to a vending machine company — a letter that unexpectedly connects him with Karen (Naomi Watts), a customer‑service rep.
