Lagaan

Set in 1893 during the British Raj in the drought-stricken village of Champaner, Lagaan follows Bhuvan, an idealistic young villager who leads his community against the oppressive land tax (lagaan) imposed by British rulers. When the arrogant British commander Captain Russell challenges the villagers to a game of cricket—offering to cancel their taxes for three years if they win, but tripling them if they lose—Bhuvan accepts the wager despite knowing nothing about the sport. With the secret coaching assistance of Russell's sympathetic sister, Elizabeth, Bhuvan unites a disparate group of local villagers, mastering the unfamiliar game to play a tense, historic match with their collective freedom and future hanging in the balance.
