Grace Pudel is a lonely, book-loving misfit living in 1970s Australia who retreats into a world of ornamental snail collecting to cope with a lifetime of misfortune and grief. After the death of her father and a painful separation from her twin brother, Gilbert, Grace’s life is marked by a series of eccentric foster homes and personal tragedies that deepen her isolation. However, her perspective begins to shift when she strikes up an unlikely and enduring friendship with Pinky, an elderly, gin-swilling eccentric with a zest for life and a colorful past. Through this bond, Grace begins to find the courage to emerge from her protective shell, learning to embrace the "silver linings" and clutter of human existence in this poignantly dark yet life-affirming stop-motion tale.
