Deep in the wilds of Appalachia, a small Pentecostal community led by Pastor Lemuel Childs practices the dangerous tradition of snake-handling to prove their devotion to God. The story follows Lemuel's daughter, Mara, as she prepares for her wedding to a devoted believer while hiding a scandalous secret: she is pregnant with the child of a non-believer who has abandoned the faith.
