Mickey and Jules are a pair of amateur, love-struck criminals on the run after a clumsy gas station robbery. When their getaway car runs out of gas in the middle of nowhere, they break into a nearby isolated suburban home looking for a fresh set of wheels. However, their simple burglary takes a dark and twisted turn when they discover a young girl chained in the basement. Before they can escape, the homeowners—a seemingly polite but deeply psychopathic couple named George and Gloria—return home, sparking a sadistic cat-and-mouse game where the young intruders realize they are far outmatched by the house's true villains.
