Moving across two parallel timelines separated by centuries, the story follows contemporary scholar and writer Nick Tosches, who is called upon by the New York mafia to authenticate what appears to be the original handwritten manuscript of The Divine Comedy discovered in the Vatican archives, only for him to steal it and trigger a lethal underworld pursuit; simultaneously, the narrative mirrors 14th-century Italy, chronicling Dante Alighieri's own grueling, mystical journey and obsessive search for love and divine grace as he pens his timeless masterpiece.
