Waris Shah: Ishq Daa Waaris (2006) is a poetic historical biopic in Punjabi that follows the journey of the revered 18th-century Sufi poet Waris Shah, portrayed by Gurdas Maan, as he crafts his timeless epic Heer Ranjha. Under Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s ban on music, Waris seeks guidance from his mentor Baba Makhdoom and travels to the village of Malkan Hans. There he encounters Bhaagpari (Juhi Chawla), with whom he falls in love, while Saabo (Divya Dutta) becomes infatuated with him, setting off a complicated emotional conflict. As Bhaagpari is forced to marry Saabo’s brother, Waris experiences the pain his guru said he needed to truly write Heer. Accusations follow, leading to a dramatic trial by walking through fire to prove innocence, and ultimately, after completing his masterpiece, Waris departs the village, having endured love, rivalry, sacrifice, and artistic revelation .
