Stargate

When an ancient, ring-shaped artifact is unearthed in Giza, Egypt, linguist Dr. Daniel Jackson is recruited by the military to decode its mysterious hieroglyphs. He discovers the object is a "Stargate," an interstellar portal that transports him and a high-stakes reconnaissance team, led by Colonel Jack O'Neil, across the universe to the desert planet of Abydos. There, they encounter a human civilization enslaved by the tyrannical alien Ra, who poses as an ancient Egyptian god. To return home, the team must lead a local rebellion to overthrow the false deity and secure the gateway before a nuclear device intended to seal the portal destroys them all.
